Liberalism

In the religious sense, liberalism refers to the outlook that traditional beliefs may be adapted or disposed of to suit modern circumstances. The Liberal constitution, which was adopted in Spain in 1812, undermined the church’s power and suppressed the Inquisition in Spain and its colonies. In Latin America, Liberalism came to represent freedom from economic interference by the state, as well as a desire to shape Latin American countries in the image of Europe.
