Creole
This term is used in a variety of ways in different parts of the Americas. In the early Spanish colonies, creole (criollo) referred to a person of European ancestry who was born in the Americas, whereas peninsulares were people of European ancestry who were born in the Iberian peninsula. However, Caribbean this word often for anyone descended from European settlers, including people of mixed ancestry. In Suriname, the term was used for people descended from enslaved peoples.
