Shiva
is the Hebrew word for seven, and denotes a traditional, seven-day period of mourning immediately following the burial of a deceased family member (parent, child, sibling, or spouse). Observance of Shiva entails the lighting of a candle which will burn for seven days, covering mirrors, and sitting on low stools while at home as a sign of mourning. Shiva concludes on the morning of the seventh day with Shacharit, or a morning service.
