Mappamundi

Mappamundi, Mappa Mundi, Mappemond, and others are all terms deriving from the Latin “Mappa Mundus” (pl. Mappae Mundi) meaning map(s) of the world. Mappamundi specifically refers to maps of the world created during the Middle Ages. Rather than aiding in navigation, these maps were often used to outline concepts such as cultural perceptions of different regions, religious philosophies, and the preservation of Classical knowledge.
