Maroon

The Maroons were groups of formerly enslaved Afrians who successfully escaped from servitude  in the Americas, who either formed their own societies in the hinterlands or joined with indigenous groups. Facing hardship, retaliation by colonial governments, and an unfamiliar environment, the retention of many aspects of African culture helped the Maroons cohere and survive. Some Maroon communities persist to this day in South America.
