Yeshiva

A Yeshiva is a type of all-male school which focuses on the thorough study of Jewish texts– although today some Yeshivas are open to female students. Many students afterwards become rabbi. However, this is not a requirement, as study of the Torah is seen as a worthy act of religious devotion in itself, irrespective of whether a student becomes a rabbi. Yeshivas are a central pillar of many Jewish communities, helping to further the study of Jewish law. In addition to conventional classes and lectures, Yeshivas feature a unique method of studying in pairs called chavrusas, which translates to friendship or companionship.
