Mezuzah

Meaning “doorpost” in Hebrew, a Mezuzah consists of a small piece of parchment (klaf) on which is written “Hear, O Israel, the Lord (is) our God, the Lord is One” contained within a carved and decorated case. Mezuzah are fastened to the doorposts of Jewish homes, and depending on the interpretation of the mitzvah “write the words of God on the gates and doorposts of your house” (Deuteronomy 6:9), sometimes in every doorway within them.
